Case Study: Team Building

Situation

A Fortune 500 software company needed to ensure the success of a new, mission-critical engineering team. Top performers from many nations and cultures would be working together remotely. Team leader Marco Aurelio needed to jumpstart the team's new project and build a productive, efficient dynamic. With tight deadlines looming, there was no room for interpersonal conflict.

Solution

Using the Myers-Briggs framework, PSP performed an individual assessment for each team member and helped them categorize themselves and each other. They gained a deeper understanding of their own tendencies and preferences and were able to see how others' strengths contributed to the team dynamic. By presenting MBTI in a logical, straightforward manner, PSP persuaded these highly analytical individuals to evolve their interpersonal skills and work together more effectively.

Result

Since their field emphasizes logic and data, many team members had never stopped to think about how relationships with colleagues and communication styles might affect the group's productivity. As individual members learned about their strengths and preferences, they saw how their diversity as a team could make them more productive and effective. As one team member noted, “There's a big difference between knowledge and wisdom, and today you gave us wisdom.”

“In the days following the training, team members are still using the MBTI vocabulary,” says team leader Marco Aurelio. “They specifically called out the training as useful and as an effective way for us to get to know one another better and be more open and honest in our relationships at work.”

As a result of PSP's training, the team hit the ground running.
